Enticing flavors of pear, pineapple, and passionfruit play across the palate. Light bodied with crisp acidity, it is balanced by the perfect amount of sweetness." (https://www.totalwine.com/wine/dessert-fortified-wine/honey-wine/hive-honey-riesling/p/215626750)
  • My Review: This wine really lived up to its name. It had a sugary scent with notes of light white florals and honeysuckle. It also had lingering notes of bright white citrus, but not in a sour way. It was pleasingly sweet without being too syrupy.
  • I enjoyed this wine alongside pasta with garlic and butter chicken, spinach, and parmesan cheese. The lightly sweet flavors in the wine paired well with the aromatic flavors of butter and garlic in the chicken. It was a nice meal to enjoy outside on my porch on a warm spring evening.

  • My Review: This was the first $70 bottle of wine I've sampled and I could definitely taste why it is listed at this price point. This wine was beautifully balanced. The red fruity flavors of raspberry and cherry were balanced with a subtle, spicy oak finish that was awesome even without any food to compliment it. Tasting - "Fuerza Ego bodegas"

This wine was one of the darkest reds that I have tried!

  • Name: Fuerza Ego bodegas
  • Variety: Monastrell and Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Region: Jumilla
  • Country: Spain
  • Year: Non-vintage
  • Price: $10

  • Wine Critic Review: "This ripe, warm-smelling blend of 75% Monastrell and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon deals aromas of jammy blackberry and baked plum. The palate is thick and chewy, with leathery flavors of roasted plum and baked berry fruits. Notes of raisin, chocolate, and earthy spice can be found on a lush finish. Drink through 2018." (https://www.winemag.com/buying-guide/fuerza-2010-red-jumilla)
  • My Review: For the price point this wine tasted expensive. It smelled potently of dark cherries. The wine was beautifully smooth with balanced tannic flavor. It had a real spiciness and warmth to it that gave off the impression of cloves and oak.
  • I drank this wine with some penne pasta that I cooked with sweet Italian sausage, green peppers, and tomato sauce. The food made the wine taste more tannic and acidic, probably due to the sweetness of the Italian sausage. The acidity paired well with the tomato sauce and brought out its underlying sweetness.

Underneath there is a white floral component that adds complexity." (https://spitbucket.net/2017/12/09/60-second-wine-reviews-levert-freres-cremant-bourgogne/)
  • My Review: I did not really care for this sparkling wine. It was quite dry in a way that wasn't pleasant to my palate. It also tasted slightly yeasty. I did detect some notes of crisp green apple.
  • I drank this wine after I ate a chocolate chip cookie. This sweet dessert may have made the wine taste drier and more bitter than it really was. They definitely didn't pair well.

  • My Review: This wine was lovely. It was light and crist and had notes of sweet strawberry. It wasn't cloyingly sweet, however, and was well balanced.
  • I drank this wine with some pasta I made. It was penne pasta with marinara sauce cooked with spinach, zucchini, and italian sausage. No other wine reflects the land of the Gaucho like this Argentinean Malbec. Rich flavors of dark cherries and plum mingle with sultry notes of vanilla and chocolate, carrying this esteemed wine to a passionate finish, leaving one wishing that night would never end.

  • My Review: I normally really enjoy Malbecs, so it was no surprise to me that this wine was great. The wine was a beautiful deep ruby hue in the glass. It possessed a sweet dark cherry scent with a hint of spicy vanilla. The wine was dry but balanced with beautiful deep, dark fruity flavors. It was full bodied and smooth with a well-rounded finish.
  • I had this wine with a calzone from DP Dough. The deep sweetness paired well with the tangy marinara sauce and the tannic undertones came out to play with the fatty flavor of the mozzarella cheese and earthy sausage. The experience was truly indulgent.

Wine Dinner Report - Potluck Dinner Party

Wine Dinner Report - Potluck Dinner Party

The gang's all back together in Blacksburg.

For my our first Wine Dinner, my friends and I decided to have a potluck-style three-course meal. Since we would be hanging out together anyway, we thought a group dinner would be a great excuse to sample some food and wine pairings. Three people made a dish and the other three brought a bottle of wine to pair with the dishes. It was the first time all of us had been together since before Winter Break, so we really enjoyed catching up.

1st Course - Bruschetta with Manina Sauvignon Blanc

For our first pairing, we enjoyed an appetizer of bruschetta. My friend Jake toasted a baguette in the oven and topped it with fresh mozzarella. He then added chopped tomatoes and basil marinated in balsamic vinaigrette. The salty mozzarella went well with the fresh, aromatic basil and acidic tomatoes. The dark and sweet flavor of the balsamic glaze rounded out the flavors and gave this dish a harmonious finish.

Manina Sauvignon Blanc

The wine chosen to pair with this dish was a 2018 Manina Sauvignon Blanc. It was a Chilean wine from the Valle Central region and was about $13. The wine was lovely. It had a light sweet scent in the glass and was a beautiful medium yellow hue. It had a fresh and bright opening that was pleasant on the palate. The flavor was sweet and light with hints of lemon. This light white wine paired well with the strong flavors in the bruschetta. The saltiness of the mozzarella also balanced well with the wine's subtle sweetness. The bright quality of the wine went well with the herbal notes of the aromatic basil.

2nd Course - Baked Brie with Caramelized Onions and Red Diamond Merlot

Our second course was a baked brie with caramelized onions enveloped in puff pastry and baked to a gorgeous golden brown. The fatty, buttery brie was incredible and the sweetness of the caramelized onions brought out the subtle nuttiness in the cheese. The delicate puff pastry held together the melty brie beautifully and provided structure to the melty dish. This dish was amazing, albeit a bit messy to cut and eat. It was a crowd favorite and disappeared from the plate quickly.

Red Diamond Merlot

We paired our second course with a 2014 Red Diamond Merlot from Paterson, Washington. It was purchased for about $11. I have never tasted a wine grown in the Pacific Northwest, so I was excited to see what kind of terroir this region would express in the wine. This merlot provided a full, red, and fruity scent when I performed the initial sniff and swirl and was a deep ruby red color. I found this Merlot to be quite enjoyable. It had notes of red fruit and cassis and was subtly dry without being too offensive or deeply tannic. The wine was easy on the palate and possessed a smooth finish that was quite enjoyable. The subtly sweet flavor of the Merlot complemented the sweet buttery notes of the caramelized onions well. The delicious fatty flavor of the brie cut any acidity in the red and made it a great addition to this dish.

3rd Course - Red Pepper Spaghetti Bolognaise with Pinot Evil Pinot Noir

Our third and final course consisted of a Red Pepper Bolognaise over Spaghetti. This was the least complicated dish of the three prepared and the most reflective of our broke college student diets. When it comes to pasta, however, with good ingredients complexity is not always necessary. This dish married the sweet flavor of tomato sauce with the subtle spice of red pepper. These flavors were balanced well with the fatty, earthy flavor of ground beef sauteed with garlic. This was a great way to round out the meal.

Pinot Evil Pinot Noir

Our final wine of the evening was a non-vintage Pinot Noir from Pinot Evil. This Pinot Noir was also from Chile, like the Sauvignon Blanc from the first course, and was a great value at $8. This red had a sharper scent than the Merlot and I definitely noticed the difference between the two. This Pinot was a sweet and relatively light-bodied red with notes of strawberry jam. Its sweetness was balanced well with a light acidity that gave the wine an easy smoothness. The sweeter taste of the tomato sauce, however, made the less sweet wine taste more tannic in comparison. The garlicky, meaty flavors also seemed to bring out the deeper, more tannic notes of the wine. The outcome of this pairing was a bit unexpected. The dish definitely changed the flavor of the wine in a way that at first surprised me, but as I continued to drink and eat I found I enjoyed the new qualities brought out in the wine.

Overall, I really enjoyed this experience. Seeing how the different wines paired with the dishes was a very cool exercise. I learned that I really do not know the complexities that define which wines pair best with which food. For some reason, I think I have created an association between wine and food based on color, ie. lighter foods like fish and poultry go well with whites and darker foods like tomato sauces and red meat go well with reds. I will have to do more research to see if this association is necessarily true, but I have a feeling it is more nuanced than that.

  • My Review: I really enjoyed this sparkling wine. It had a subtle fresh scent and was not as bubbly as other sparkling wines I've had. I enjoyed this as it made the wine very drinkable. It was on the drier side and was not overly sweet.
  • I had this wine at a Superbowl party. We enjoyed it alongside some typical party foods such as chips with guacamole and queso. We also had it with some non-traditional mango sriracha cauliflower "wings" that my vegan friend made. The champagne paired well with the variety of dishes. The dry flavor was mild and complemented the sweetness of the mango in the cauliflower wings and the saltiness of the chips and dip.

  • Year: Non-vintage
  • Price: $4

  • Wine Critic Review: "High in color, tannin, and extract, Cabernet Sauvignon expresses notes of blackberry, cassis, plum, currant, spice, and tobacco. In Bordeaux and elsewhere in the Old World you'll find the more earthy, tannic side of Cabernet, where it is typically blended to soften tannins and add complexity. " (https://www.wine.com/product/grape-and-vine-wine-company-cabernet-sauvignon/512221).

  • My Review: The wine was dark red in color and had a deeply sweet and fruity scent. The wine tasted bold and sweet and had notes reminiscent of red stone fruit. The taste of tannin and spices lingered on the palate. I could taste that this wine lacked the depth of flavor and smoothness of a higher priced wine of the same variety.
  • I did not have the wine with any food, but I did drink a whiskey and ginger ale before drinking a few glasses of this wine. The sweetness on my palate made the wine taste a bit sharp on the first sip, but this went away as I continued to drink the wine.

Tasting - "Woodbridge Riesling"

Tasting - "Woodbridge Riesling"

  • Name: Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi Riesling
  • Variety: Riesling
  • Region: Lodi, California American Viticultural Area (AVA)
  • Country: United States
  • Year: Non-vintage
  • Price: $13
  • Wine Critic Review: "With delicate aromas of jasmine, stone fruit, and crisp citrus, our Riesling is an excellent alternative to more traditional whites. The wine's combination of rich, round textures, lightly sweet flavor, and refreshing acidity makes it easy to enjoy. With a slightly lower alcohol content, this Riesling is the perfect wine to pair with a variety of foods, including lightly sautéed chicken, seared scallops, or a crisp apple tart. Or serve it chilled by itself on a warm afternoon." (https://www.woodbridgewines.com/Wines/riesling.php)

  • My Review: The wine had a sharp, fresh scent to start but a sweet, urine-like note lingered. Upon the first sip, the wine was sweet and fresh without a lot of depth in flavor. It was very light and drinkable.
  • I did not have the wine with any food.

Tasting - "Yellow Tail Shiraz"

Tasting - "Yellow Tail Shiraz"

  • Name: Yellow Tail Shiraz
  • Variety: Shiraz
  • Region: Riverina
  • Country: Australia
  • Year: 2017
  • Price: $5
  • Wine Critic Review: "'This vibrant red shows juicy blackberry flavors and hints of spice, finishing with an open texture.' The palate is perfectly balanced, with soft tannins and fine French oak, complemented by ripe fruit flavors." -Wine Spectator on Total Wine & More's website (https://www.totalwine.com/wine/red-wine/syrah-shiraz/yellow-tail-shiraz/p/93193750)
  • My Review: The wine had a full, fruity aroma with a hint of warm spices. The wine has a tannic taste which slightly masks the more subtle flavors of red fruit. The wine started smooth but had a sharp finish. It was very drinkable.
  • I did not have the wine with any food, but I had recently eaten ice cream about an hour before drinking it. This may have made this drier wine taste less appealing. I also tasted a Pinot Grigio before tasting this Shiraz.

Tasting - "Dellatorri Pino Grigio"

Tasting - "Dellatorri Pinot Grigio"

  • Name: Dellatorri
  • Variety: Pinot Grigio
  • Region: Delle Venezie
  • Country: Italy
  • Year: 2017
  • Price: $12

  • Wine Critic Review: "That extra year in the bottle seems to have dulled the wine's natural freshness leaving a musky, hummus-like element that is uncharacteristic of Pinot Grigio." -Wine Enthusiast (https://www.winemag.com/buying-guide/dellatorri-2003-pinot-grigio-gris-grigio-delle-venezie)
  • My Review: The wine had a sweet crisp aroma that reminded me slightly of apples. The wine had a sharp, tart flavor when it first hit the palate. Upon several tastings, I could not really tease out very many complex flavors. It really did not taste sweet at all. It tasted quite dry and vinegary. I did not really care for it.
  • I did not have the wine with any food, but I had recently eaten ice cream about an hour before drinking it. This may have made this drier wine taste less appealing.

Welcome to My Blog!

Hello everyone and welcome to my wine blog!

My name is Jillian Kazmierczak and I am a Senior at Virginia Tech studying Animal and Poultry Sciences and Biology. My plans after graduation are to, hopefully, attend veterinary school here in Blacksburg. I grew up in Sterling, Virginia with my parents, younger sisters, two cats, and a wiener dog.

This semester I am taking a class called, Geography of Wine, and I plan to use this blog to diary my learning experiences.

The Kaz Family enjoying a typical Thanksgiving feast paired with sass and a nice Chardonnay.

I come from a family that loves to experiment in the kitchen and try different foods and drinks. Since I was young my parents have always offered me a taste of whatever alcoholic beverage they were enjoying. As I grew older I began to develop a taste for alcohol and enjoyed a glass of wine or a beer at dinner with them. My preferences mostly developed by trying the wines that my parents chose and seeing what I liked.

My Dad and I enjoying some Moscow Mules during happy hour at the King Street Oyster Bar in Leesburg, VA.

My parents exposed me to a lot of different wines. My Dads favorites include Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay. My mom likes most any kind of wine, but especially sparkling wines like Champagne. I like most of the wines I have tried at home, but I tend to enjoy slightly sweet, crisp whites and fruity reds that aren't too bitter. The only wines I've had that I truly disliked are those that are very oaky and dry.

My roommate and I attempting to properly open some bottles of sparkling wine at a Center Street tailgate.

When I got to college I began trying the wines that are favorites of young college kids such as Franzia Rose, Barefoot Moscato, and Andre Sparkling Wine. Many of these wines were a lot sweeter than those I had tried at home but they were thoroughly enjoyed at many tailgates and wine nights.

I have also had the opportunity to travel and try wines throughout my home state of Virginia and abroad. While traveling I've been lucky enough to try wines in countries like France, Germany, Australia, and Panama. I've also enjoyed visiting local wineries and breweries throughout Virginia such as Beliveau Estate Winery, Stone Tower Winery, Solace Brewing Company, 2 Silos Brewing Company, and Quattro Goombas Winery. It has been awesome to be able to try different drinks and see how their flavors are associated with the places where they are made and the techniques used to make them. I hope to visit many more throughout my time in this course and share my thoughts on this blog.

Although I have tried plenty of wine, I don't have much technical knowledge about the different types of wine,  the history surrounding wine, and the process through which wine is made. From this course, I hope to try more types of wine so I can further develop my preferences, while also learning more about the proper way to drink and talk about wine. I would love to one day be able to speak confidently about the glass of wine I am enjoying, whether I am out to a fancy dinner or at home watching the Bachelor on my couch.

Thank you for reading and welcome again to my blog!
